Warm weather has finally returned to Kenosha, appearing to bring everything and everyone out of a sleepy winter reverie. Second Saturdays, a free event from 6-9 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, is also in full swing and livelier than ever, providing a great opportunity for residents and visitors to get out, shake off the winter “blahs” and enjoy the community. The balmy weather we’re enjoying also makes it even more pleasant to visit the participating shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants, many of which are within walking distance of each other. Adding to the fun is the fact that the Union Park, downtown and harborside areas are a veritable treasure hunt for adults during Second Saturdays. You never know what kind of gems await you at the next gallery or the next business, be it music, art or food. Grown-ups aren’t the only ones who can enjoy Second Saturdays though. If family fun is what you’re looking for, you’ll find it! With so many establishments participating each month, it’s guaranteed that you won’t run out of things to see or do.
At the various local art galleries, stop in to see amazing pieces created by artists from Kenosha and beyond, whether it’s paintings, drawings, mosaics, sculpture, jewelry, or perhaps even a different medium that you’re discovering for the first time. Expect to be warmly welcomed, and possibly encouraged to enjoy some hors d’oeuvres while you peruse all of the art. Many of the galleries also hold opening night receptions for featured artist shows on Second Saturdays, offering the unique opportunity to meet and talk with some of the artists whose work is on display.
If shopping is more your idea of fun on a Saturday night, the participating stores often have special promotions and sales running during Second Saturdays. There are a wide variety of items to browse through, including home décor and accents, clothing, jewelry, handcrafted items, toys, books and more, from the traditional to one of a kind.
Live music is also a fixture at almost every stop, adding to the festive mood that prevails throughout the night. Solo acts, bands, and even informal drum circles play a wide variety of music from different genres.
For those looking for a little bit of pampering and relaxation after a long week, area day spas may be able to offer just what you need to revive your body and spirit.
After you’ve enjoyed art, chatted, shopped, and listened to music, a little late dinner or an indulgent treat can be a terrific end to your Second Saturday adventures. Several restaurants and cafes are open until 9 p.m. or beyond to accommodate the Second Saturday crowd. From full dinners, to pastries and ice cream, to coffee, tea, or wine, there’s bound to be something to satisfy everyone’s appetite.
One of the most appealing aspects of Second Saturdays is that it’s always evolving and changing, so even if you’ve participated in the past, you still won’t have seen it all. If you’ve enjoyed yourself during one month’s event, there’s always another to look forward to.
